Date – 1st November 2008 – April 2011.

Coordinator – Italian Ministry of Culture.

Project website – www.athenaeurope.org.

The project has more than 20 partners among European countries plus Israel, Russia and Azerbaijan. At the present moment over 100 museums and other cultural institutions are directly associated with ATHENA project. Cooperation agreement between Lithuanian Art Museum and ATHENA was signed on 14th December 2009.

There are three forms of collaboration with ATHENA:

  • Join the project and provide Europeana with digitised content.
  • Spread information about ATHENA project and become involved in various initiatives aimed at expanding ATHENA network.
  • Take part in ATHENA working groups.

Lithuanian Museums’ Centre for Information, Digitisation and LIMIS (LM IDC LIMIS) has developed the integral virtual exhibition system. It enables Lithuanian museums to ingest their content into ATHENA. The system is compatible with LIDO (Lightweight Information Describing Objects) tool especially designed by ATHENA technical partners. It facilitates the integration of museums metadata and opens up a possibility to publish their digitised content in Europeana.

When an organization or institution joins ATHENA project the direct connection with Europeana is established. Furthermore, accessing world’s collections becomes easier as well as finding colleagues all across Europe. With the help of electronic conferences, seminars and meetings project partners actively communicate and cooperate.

ATHENA is a bridge to Europeana. Its catchword is: “Who is not showing himself won’t be seen”.
